Takis Fotopoulos An Exchange between John Griffin and Takis Fotopoulos. (2000.)

John Griffin: Dodgy Logic and the Olympians.

Whilst considering this book and Richard Griffin's (no relation) article in TL4 about science and "postmodernism", my thoughts strayed to the earliest of the ancient Greek philosophers, those who came before Socrates. A good deal of what they had to say really lay in the realm of science, as we would now call it, for their purpose was to grasp what made the world tick. As the centuries unfolded, the sciences developed as separate branches of enquiry, and philosophy increasingly concerned itself with how we humans fitted into the world, that is with mind. Faced with contemporary disasters like Marxism and nuclear bombs, one branch of "postmodernism" has made the separation with science the more emphatic by expressing disenchantment and even hostility towards it.

I persist in using the inverted commas because I’m not sure what "postmodernism" is. If it were limited to a critique of the philosophy and science spawned by our authoritarian cultures - the inhuman bigness, reductionism and needless gadgetry ― i would have no quarrel with it.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres Felix Gonzalez-Torres: Be a Spy. Interviewed by Robert Storr. (1995.)

The work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres has quickly risen to a preeminent place on the international scene as one of the most personal oeuvres in contemporary art. The great number of shows currently devoted to his output, including the major exhibition planned for the Guggenheim (17 February - 7 March, 1995) are ample proof of this attention. Criticized as being a politically correct artist, Gonzalez-Torres strikes back in the following interview, calling for a veritable guerrilla war - intelligent and undercover - against the plethora of straightforward, moralizing works of art with their angry-young-man messages. You recently took part in an exhibition in London that placed you in context with Joseph Kosuth, and the pair of you in context with Ad Reinhardt. And I was struck by the fact that instead of trying to separate yourself from previous generations, you joined with Kosuth in establishing an unexpected aesthetic lineage. Could you talk about that a little bit because on the whole, younger artists generally avoid putting themselves in such close proximity to their predecessors, especially conceptualists in relation to painters?

I don't really see it that way. I think more than anything else I'm just an extension of certain practices, minimalism or conceptualism, that I am developing areas I think were not totally dealt with.

Kosta KrauthKosta Krauth: Application of crowdsourcing principles outside the virtual realm. (2010.)

Abstract

Crowdsourcing has been on a steady rise during the last couple of years. We have witnessed numerous projects and business that succeeded thanks to being built on top of its principles. When applied correctly, there is no questioning that crowdsourcing can be an invaluable resource, but so far this has been mostly limited to the digital environment. Lately, however, there have been numerous attempts to bridge the gap that exists between the digital and analogue crowdsourcing worlds, resulting in both optimism and criticism from various standpoints. This paper will explore the viability of using such principles in the physical world and discuss concerns surrounding the topic.

Introduction

Crowdsourcing has been around long before it was given a name. Put simply, it is a way for companies, organizations and individuals to offer a reward for a particular task that can be undertaken by any number of individuals willing to compete for it under the given framework of rules. The term itself was first coined in a Wired magazine article (1) and separately defined on the article author’s blog as:
